Finally, as an additional alternative, you may verify this Foundation's tax-exempt status and eligibility to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions by calling the IRS (toll-free) at 1-877-829-5500.

The above IRS web-site discloses that we have been granted the IRS's highest accreditation as a "Public Charity" as opposed to a Private Foundation and this means, among other things,  that we are eligible for the highest tax deductions (50% of a donor's adjusted gross income) possible.  Of course, this means that we must follow very stringent IRS regulations in order to retain this valued designation.    (see also BBB on IRS).

We are NOT AUTHORIZED to make grants to individuals, nor to organizations that themselves would process and pass on the grants to still other organizations (that we may make direct payments to, ourselves) like those listed immediately below.

We MUST make grants ONLY to grantees who themselves do the evaluation of individual prospective recipients who would ultimately benefit from their grants, and are also commonly called publicly supported organizations (such as Feed the Hungry, Unitarian Fellowship, etc.)

In conjunction with the above IRS requirements, it should be known that the Founder has sworn to uphold these promises to IRS during his lifetime, but since the Founder can only physically guarantee our promises during his lifetime, he has arranged for many legal controls covering the trustee's actions after his demise.  There is more information regarding this at the following links: FAQs and the most specific details at Our trustees and in the founders will.  There is also a subsequent changes page that lists any changes made AFTER the Founder's death.

We have been accredited by IRS in their January 4, 2002 determination letter to us (with an "effective as of August 6, 2001" date).  We have been given our Tax ID# of 31-1799914.  A copy of this letter may be found (see item 4) at Legalities

IRS stated that they have determined that we "are exempt from federal income tax under section 501(a) of the internal revenue code as a organization described in section 501(c)(3)."

And IRS further determined that we "are not a private foundation within the meaning of section 509(a) of the Code, because you are an organization  described in section 509(a)(3)".  This means that we are a public charity and not a private foundation or even a private operating foundation.

IRS has published their requirements for various types of Foundations (including ours) and they are listing on the internet at http://www.irs.gov/charities/charitable/
